There are many different ways to raise children. People use various kinds of parenting styles depending on things like how they were raised, their community standards and socioeconomic factors. There is no one right or wrong way to raise children; sometimes, different children in the same family may require diverging parenting styles. Two of the most prominent parenting styles are outlined below.
Permissive Parenting
On the scale of being too strict or too lenient, permissive parents fall nearer the lenient end of the spectrum. These types of parents tend to believe that children need to make their own mistakes. This kind of parenting usually revolves around the concept that children should be free to explore the world on their own terms. Parents who use this style of parenting tend to be pretty lax regarding curfews and bedtimes.
However, permissive parenting does pose some problems. Children do need to have clear boundaries as they grow up. All too often, overly permissive parents fail to draw these boundaries, confusing their kids. Children who are raised by overly permissive parents may feel that their parents simply do not care enough about them to enforce any real rules. Parents who opt for this parenting style need to be careful not to take things too far.
Strict Parenting
On the opposite end of the scale is the strict parenting method. These parents impose rules on every aspect of their kids' lives. In fact, they exert so much control of their children that the kids may not have the opportunity to explore life on their own. Children with strict parents tend to keep out of trouble more, but they are also less likely to feel confident in trying new things and situations.
Strict parenting can also be very time consuming for parents. It requires a lot of diligence and follow through. Some kids really require this method of parenting in order to flourish, though. Without strict rules, some kids easily fall through the cracks and end up having a lot of problems later in life.
Whether someone chooses strict or permissive parenting, there is truly no one correct way to raise kids. Sometimes, trying to find a happy medium between these two extremes is the best way to go.
